Laura Portillo-Brandstetter in Vienna Comix October 2015
GroovyRoo is the independent project of illustration Laura Portillo-Brandstetter (Graduated Master in Graphic Design in 2008. Maracaibo, Venezuela).

Laura started to draw and create since a pretty young age. Influence by her dad's job as technical drawing and electrical technician for the oil company. With the support of a loving family Laura always had everything that she needed for creating all the she imagined and more. Until this day one of the gifts of choose are notebooks, paper supplies and pencils which she collects.

This began as an experiment that ended being one of the most addictive hobby she ever had. It begins back to 2007 when performing for a television spot for an university event in the realisation of the first original animation and illustration. That was just the beginning her desire to improve what already she had originally created with such emotion she found out that the illustration world wasn't as simple as she thought, so she began experimenting with different styles ...

Every test and error of that the journey is what we know today as the last illustrations (The profile designer Laura Portillo-Brandstetter) what is today known as GroovyRoo. Laura mayors influences are Kawaii Art & Naive art, two art movements well know for their innocence and childish charm.

Her dreams were bigger that she expected for that reason she decided that Venezuela her home for about 26 years wasn't the place for her to start and create a brand. After getting married with the love of her life and moving to Vienna, Austria were she live nowadays she started to notice that something was missing. And that's who GroovyRoo as brand started to build in October 2015 was her first ever convention as an artist.

Why "GroovyRoo" as name?

The name is word game. Why? Let's start saying that one of her influences was also the color and positivity of the 70's. Groovy is a word used by the Anglo teens to say that everything is "okay" or "Cool" as we use it today, I found the game perfect words to define my colourful and childish style, the word game ends with two more "O" to make it very unique and playful.
